The C9 Britomart East Contract works will help to future proof Britomart Station so that it’s ready for increased patronage once the CRL is built.
These works are included within CRL’s $4.4 billion funding envelope.
Works as part of the C9 Contract are currently detailed as follows:
Modifying and improving existing track infrastructure within the Britomart East junction
Raising the west end B2 platform and concourse
Subsurface infrastructure including relocation of a tunnel wall underneath Britomart Place, strengthening beams, and utility relocation to enable beam strengthening
New equipment, control and driver accommodation rooms within the Chief Post Office basement
The C9 Contract is currently in the investigation and design phase. Some parts of the C9 Contract’s scope are able to be fast tracked under the government’s “shovel ready projects” package, however we are still determining consenting requirements.
Construction is scheduled to start in late-2020 and is estimated to be completed in early-2024.
Works as part of the C9 Contract are generally of lesser scale when compared with other contract packages that make up the CRL project and are mostly confined to existing underground rail infrastructure. This means that their impact to project neighbours is confined to discreet locations.
The installation of track scissors at the eastern end of Britomart Station together with associated civil works will be constructed by KiwiRail as the first part of C9 Contract works.
Construction of vertical transportation is currently being investigated. This will eventually be required to enable egress once 9-car electric trains are in place.
There is limited above-ground work forecasted to impact on project neighbours. Potentially disruptive work includes the enabling works for the relocation and realignment of the tunnel wall which will occur within a discreet footprint within the eastern side footpath of Britomart Place.
Once the scope of works to build vertical transportation is finalised, there will also be localised impact of construction on construction neighbours.
