The Te Waihorotiu Station team wishes you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
|
|
Kia ora,
It has been a massive 2022 at Te Waihorotiu Station with many major milestones achieved this year, despite the ongoing challenges of COVID-19. These include the structural completion of all three entrances, removal of all excavation spoil from the main station alignment, completion of all station roof and concourse concrete slabs, countless utility pipe upgrades, the arrival of the TBM, and the start of architectural and systems fit-out works. Read on for more!
We also continued to support local businesses and residents with community activations, site improvements, and the Link Alliance Small Business Support Programme. We shared the station's progress with Aucklanders, as part of various arts & culture programmes as well as numerous tours - including most recently a special "Tamariki in the Tunnels" visit captured by TVNZ's Seven Sharp and our video crew.
Over the holiday period many of our construction crews will take a well-deserved break between 23 December and 3 January, though some critical works will continue. We will also have a security team operating across the site at all times. As always, you can contact us anytime by email aotea@linkalliance.co.nz or call 0800 CRL TALK (0800 275 8255 and press option 3).
We wish you and your loved ones a fantastic holiday season! Check out the wide range of festive events, attractions and live on-street performers at Heart of the City, including the Sky Tower fireworks on New Year's Eve (click here for the NYE city centre traffic management plan).
Kind regards,
The Te Waihorotiu Station team

Supporting the midtown community

Thank you for the feedback and comments we have received this year. We are very pleased to advise that in our recent community survey a 78% satisfaction rating was reported - this is a record high.
As the Te Waihorotiu Station underground concrete structure nears completion, we have been taking some of our small business neighbours on special underground tours as a sign of our appreciation for their patience during construction and also to show them the huge progress being made - often right below their shop doorsteps!

The 2022 round of the Link Alliance Small Business Support Programme (SBSP) has supported local businesses with free and independent business advice alongside $3000 microgrants.
Tony's Lord Nelson Restaurant (37 Victoria St West) is one of Auckland’s oldest surviving restaurants established in 1978 and their exquisite interiors paired with heartwarming meals are truly unique. With support from the SBSP, new neon signs and lights have been installed and they are looking great. We highly recommend this as a venue for meals over the holiday season - Ann and Don will take good care of you!

This month we've been sharing some aroha (love) with our neighbours with a pot of Manuka honey thanks to Natural Health (62 Albert St). Check out their great product range for Christmas gift ideas. Pictured here is owner Suresh inside his shop Liquor and Tobacco City (45 Victoria St West), which has a wide range of alcohol specialising in spirits and liquors. Suresh and his wife Rosey have been operating here for over 23 years!

Looking for somewhere to see in the new year? Proudly supported by Link Alliance, The Paperbacks will be playing live on 31 December at The Fiddler Irish Bar (71 Victoria St West). The Paperbacks are a popular Auckland-based duo specialising in cheeky covers with a twist of soul - enjoy your night!

2022 retrospective

The space here is not nearly enough to list all 2022 progress and milestones for the station, but a few key ones include:
- Structural completion of all three station entrances (one on Wellesley St, and two on Victoria St)
- Removal of all excavation spoil from the main station alignment
- Completion of all station roof and concourse concrete slabs - with all base slabs to be complete in January
- Completion of the running tunnel boxes from Waitematā Station (Britomart) linking in Te Waihorotiu Station
- Countless utility pipe upgrades including the bulk watermain serving the city centre
- Arrival of the TBM, completing the second CRL tunnel from Maungawhau / Mount Eden and Karanga-a-Hape Stations
- Start of architectural and systems fit-out works
- Successfully working through COVID-19 restrictions and impacts

A whopping 24,000m3 of concrete was poured during 2022 (equivalent to approximately 500m3 each week), with a massive 6000T of steel reinforcing (equivalent to around 120T each week). By August, the entire roof of the main station alignment had been cast, as well as the roof of the Wellesley entrance building (above).
|
|
By October all concourse level (one level below surface) concrete had been cast. Pictured above is the team about to pour the final concourse slab, with the reinforcing steel ready and in place. By December, the vast majority of station base slabs (where platform and tracks will run) had also been cast with only a small section remaining as we head into 2023.

In August, the new Crowne Plaza Hotel / Atrium Carpark airbridge was structurally completed. This also enabled full access into Manhattan Apartments to be reinstated. Pictured here is Sam (left) from Peppers Cafe on 99 Albert St and Bruce (right) from Manhattan Apartments at 105 Albert St - cutting the red ribbon into their driveway.

|
In September the Dame Whina Copper Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) broke through on its second tunnel drive into her final stop here at Te Waihorotiu Station, from Maungawhau and Karanga-a-Hape Stations.

|
|
This year we also welcomed our architectural and systems fit-out teams, who are now well into installation of internal walls and the early stages of rail systems. This has included both back-of-house and front-of-house blockworks walls - 45% of which is now complete equivalent to 3100m2.
|
|
|
The last bucket - excavation mission completed by November - exactly on programme even taking into account COVID-19 lockdowns. Watch the video here showing the final bit of spoil being excavated. Overall, a massive 160,000m3 has been excavated by an approximate 150,000 individual excavator grabs.

The Wellesley entrance building will have all its concrete façade panels and blockwork complete by Christmas. Next year, louvres and shingles will be installed on top of the dark concrete panels, making up the "sky element" of the station design. Take a look at this impressive building next time you are in the area.

A year filled with community, arts, activations and programmes...

...and also supporting local businesses and residents!

Midtown is becoming one of the most exciting parts of the city centre. Once complete, Te Waihorotiu Station, Te Hā Noa Victoria Street and the Wellesley Street bus corridor will be high quality public spaces for the thousands of people moving around in midtown every day. As home to a growing residential and business community, midtown also sits at the centre of a major shift in how people will travel to and from the city centre.
The Auckland Council group, including Auckland Transport and Watercare, are working closely with other projects in the midtown area to coordinate works, reduce the overall disruption to the area and get projects finished sooner. Last week the Midtown team issued their first construction update - click here to find all the information about midtown's works in once place, including upcoming Vector upgrade works starting just after Christmas.
