The City Rail Link project took huge strides forward recently with some big decisions made about funding, the preferred bidder for our C3 contract, and an expansive programme of early works.

These images show what the area outside the Britomart Transport Centre should look like in late 2020 once CRL works have moved on from there.

Auckland Year 6 children will be forever part of the design of the new Aotea Station. Thousands of pupils from Auckland’s 540 primary schools have painted and drawn images that will be fired onto ceramic tiles and used as permanent wall linings at the new underground station in central Auckland when it’s complete.

There have been a number of traffic and pedestrian walkway switches along Albert St in the past month, with more expected in the months ahead. If you are driving or walking along Albert St, plan ahead and keep track of upcoming road changes on our website.

Each month we will be introducing you to one of our neighbours from the communities we work in. For the inaugural profile, we’re introducing you to Sunny Kaushal - the owner of The Shakespeare Hotel and Brewery at 61 Albert St.

Tunnel box construction under Albert St is almost complete, with CRL contractor Connectus targeting having the last roof sections complete by the end of July this year.

Tunnel floor and tunnel walls are largely complete. Only four more sections of the roof need to be poured, and then we’ll be able to complete the backfilling under Customs St.

Our “mini” tunnel boring machine Jeffie has completed her underground journey below Mt Eden. Jeffie was used to build a new, 423-metre-long stormwater main 17 metres below city streets. Jeffie has been a little legend and an integral part of the CRL project! Read more about her journey and watch the video here.

By tradition, machines that work underground are named after women in honour of St Barbara, the patron saint of miners.

Auckland’s rangitahi – our younger generation - have a big stake in the success of the City Rail Link project. With them in mind, we are developing a new section on our website dedicated to news and resources for students and teachers.

KiwiRail has been busy carrying out works near Ōtāhuhu Station as part of the CRL - particularly during weekday business hours, weekends and public holidays when no or fewer trains are running.
